History

Name: Hamada du Draa
Location: Hamada du Draa
Western Algeria

Type: Ordinary Chondrite L5 Or 6

This meteorite fell in the evening hours of January 19 or 20, 1995.
Several local people witnessed a fireball in the southern Morocco. One
sample of about 200 kilograms was recovered. It is also known as Mhamid
or Homedo du Drua. When found by natives it was reportedly in one piece
and then was broken up with a hammer on the spot. As for the name: It
was found in Hamada du Draa which is a region in Algeria part of the
Algerian desert very close to the border of Marocco. The pieces of the
meteorite were transported by camels over the border to Marocco by
nomads (These people are the only ones who dare go over the
Algerian-Moroccon border) to the small village Mhamid, from there it
went to Morocco were it was sold to a few mineral dealers. As for the
naming convention of the Meteoritical Society it has to be named after
the place of the fall or find, and Mhamid (although close to the place)
is another country.

This meteorite was published in the Meteoritical Society Bulletin No. 82
